Special Usage

Extensions beyond the standard OpenAI format, including model-name suffix shortcuts, Gemini web search, and code execution.

Some model capabilities have no corresponding standard OpenAI parameter. FIM Gate exposes these extensions through model-name suffixes and reserved tool names, explained one by one on this page.

Model-name suffix for reasoning effort

For reasoning models like o1 / o1-mini / o3-mini, you can append #low, #medium, or #high directly to the model name. This is equivalent to setting the reasoning_effort parameter, without changing the request body structure:

curl https://api.gate.fim.ai/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FIM_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "model": "o3-mini#high",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Design a data structure for an LRU cache"}]
  }'

This is especially useful with third-party clients that only let you set a model name and offer no custom parameters.

When calling a Gemini model through the OpenAI-compatible API, pass a tool named googleSearch to enable web search:

curl https://api.gate.fim.ai/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FIM_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "model": "gemini-2.5-flash",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "What are the top tech headlines today?"}],
    "tools": [
      {
        "type": "function",
        "function": {
          "name": "googleSearch",
          "parameters": {}
        }
      }
    ]
  }'

Gemini code execution

In the same way, change the tool name to codeExecution and the model can run code in a sandbox to answer the question:

curl https://api.gate.fim.ai/v1/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FIM_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "model": "gemini-2.5-flash",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "What is the 50th Fibonacci number?"}],
    "tools": [
      {
        "type": "function",
        "function": {
          "name": "codeExecution",
          "parameters": {}
        }
      }
    ]
  }'

googleSearch and codeExecution are reserved tool names by convention — leave parameters as an empty object. They do not trigger the normal function-calling flow; instead, they directly enable the corresponding built-in Gemini capability.
